Basajabalaba stopped from Evicting Vendors

Government has blocked Bassajabalaba from evicting Nakasero Market Tenants, until an alternative land is gazetted for the vendors.

Bassajabalaba was this week planning to evict the vendors to pave way for his company, Sheila Investments to construct a large shopping center at the market.

It is estimated that 27,000 out of the 30,000 vendors at the market will be displaced by the development.

Nakasero Market tenants yesterday closed all their Shops protesting the lease of Nakasero Market to city tycoon Hassan Bassajabalaba.

Kampala City Council last week signed a 49 year lease contract with Sheila investments, in which is was agreed that Sheila investments would get 70% of the market and KCC would retain the 30% which it would manage on behalf of the tenants.

During a meeting with the Nakasero tenants this afternoon, President Yoweri Museveni’s senior Presidential advisor, on trade, Commerce and industrial matters Hajji Tezikuba Sajjabi asked the tenants to resume business as government seeks an amicable solution to their plight with KCC.

The Nakasero Tenants Association chairperson, Faridah Kimuli, had earlier warned that the shops will remain closed for as long as it takes the local government minister, Kahinda Otafire, to revoke the deal between KCC and Bassajabalaba..
