The Chinese government has donated scanners to the
Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) In support of the anti-smuggling efforts.
This was confirmed by URA’s Acting Assistant Commissioner Public and Corporate, Mr.Paul Kyeyune who added that the scanners will be used to detect undesirable persons and goods coming into the country.
The X-Ray scanners are able to scan large numbers of people and vehicles as they move in a continual stream through restricted or controlled areas, such as border checkpoints, airport terminals or outdoor arenas.
Kyeyune says two scanners will be used to scan containers to detect contraband goods at The Malaba and Busia border check points. An electronic Cargo Monitoring System, to monitor goods in transit from Mombassa to Uganda will be acquired soon.
The electronic motoring system would be linked to similar monitoring units in Kenya and Rwanda which would help in eliminating escorting goods from points of entry or to points of exit.
