Conflicts over the proposed redevelopment of markets in Kampala City are straining the already limited police resources the Kampala Extra Regional Police Commander has said.
Yesterday anti-riot police quelled a violent clash between vendors at Nakasero Market and officials of Sheila Investments in which four people were seriously injured. Sheila Investments is owned by Kampala businessman, Hassan Basajabalaba, who is behind the controversial plan to building a modern shopping mall at Nakasero Market.
The Kampala Extra Regional Police Commander, Edward Ochom, says the police are forced to intervene in disputes at markets around the city almost every week. He says they have responded to clashes at Ggaba Market, Kibuye Market and Owino Market in recent days, diverting police from their daily duties.
Ochom says it is important for both Kampala City Council and the government ministries involved in the market redevelopment program to make pronouncements on the exact course of action. He says the police are only able to contain the situation, but cannot provide a permanent solution to the problem.
The situation at Nakasero Market returned to normal by yesterday evening. However the police have maintained a presence at the market and routine patrols of the areas around the market are being conducted.
