Mwai Kibaki won Raila Odinga by 231,728 votes in a hotly contested vote that left more than 10 people dead as a result of delayed announcing of the winner. In his speech; he described the elections as "free and fair", urging all political parties to "accept the verdict of the people".
As Mr.Kivuitu was announcing the votes an ODM supporter came to the podium, shouting "Justice!" and "This is not a police state!" only to be joined by other ODM members forcing the police to lead Mr. Kivuitu from the building, only to return later and announce Mr Kibaki as the winner of the poll.
Kibaki was campaigning on the ground of the economic gains in Kenya given the last five years while Raila was of the view that the economic gains have not benefited the masses. Mwai Kibaki became President of Kenya in 2002 with the help of Raila Odinga who turned out to be the main challenger five years later.
Mwai Kibaki is a father of four born in the town of Nyeri and has been active in Kenyan Politics since independence.
