Yesterday was one day that will go down in the history of Uganda as one of the most attended by members of parliament, the house was full. It was the day when the house was to discuss the issue of amending the constitution to lift the Presidential age term limit. Those against the move have code named the process as; 'Togikwatako' which means; Don't Touch It or leave it the way it is.Ads
On the floor of parliament, Hon. Evelyn Anite was shouting on top of her voice; order, order....following Hon. Odonga Oto who proposed that she should be subjected to the disciplinary committee for her actions, Hon. Betty Bakileke Namboze survived a beating from Hon. Abiriga when she tried to take off his yellow cap, Hon. Michael Kabaziguruka had to defy doctor's orders to come on a wheelchair to deliberate on issues.
The Kampala Lord Mayor was arrested from his home as he attempted to come to town and meet councillors, but the manner in which he was arrested and how he reacted on being arrested left a lot to be desired and of course, several arrests were being made in different parts of the city.
These and many others let alone the tempers that were flaring in the house between those who were for and against the amendment of the constitution to remove the Presidential age limit left the speaker with no choice, but to adjourn the session to next week.
In all this, Kyadondo East Member of Parliament was no where to be seen as he was in New York for the Global Citizens Week speaking about healthcare in Uganda.
"I was invited by Bill Gates and his wife for a conference which was attended by Obama, the Canadian Prime Minister, The Norwegian Prime minister, The Indian Prime minister and many other world leaders and I was to represent Uganda and present a paper on democracy and governance; something I thought was so important to our struggle."
