Other than the coat of arms of Uganda, you find the Crested Crane, a gorilla and the independent monument on the visa pages of the new passport
Like other East African countries, Uganda has rolled out the issuance of the new East African Community passports.
The old passports have two years and 8 months before they expire as they will be invalid after 2021. To be exact, today makes it 20 months and three days before the old Ugandan passport becomes invalid irrespective of the expiry date.
There's no better time than getting your passport replaced other than now because many have a tendency of doing things at the last minute, but in this case, the lines will be extremely long considering that all the old passports expire on the same day.
Amazingly, if you applied for a passport today, in another 40 days, you could be having your new East African Community passport, and in a few days for those who pay for the express service.
What do you need to do?
You can download the form off https://www.immigration.go.ug/downloads/passport-application-forms or walk to the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration offices located on plot 75 Jinja road which is a few yards from the Wampewo Avenue round about, the long queues in the area cannot be missed on a good day.
The new passport has data from your national ID, so it is important that you have that ID before you think of applying because they will need it anyway.
All applicants must come with a national ID at the point of the interview, parents must fill in the consent letter while applying for their children.
All first time applicants must complete all sections except section 7 of the form. The recommender in section 8 must be a citizen of Uganda of some standing.
All applicants must appear after paying the fees (Any bank can do that) that range from Ugx 250,000/- for ordinary passports add Ugx 150,000 if you want the express service.
Ugx 400,000/- for the official or service passport, Ugx 500,000/- for the Diplomatic passport.
You can then submit your application form together with the relevant attachments that include two recent passport photos taken full face without a hat, veil. Ears and eyes must be clearly seen.
An Immigration officer will receive your forms and once there is no problem with the application, you will be given a Received slip that you can in turn use to follow up on your passport.
You are told to check back after a month and a text message confirming that your passport is ready will be sent to the phone number you used while applying for your passport.
Days left before your old Ugandan passport expires:
The New Passport
Just like the old passport, the new one has 48 pages, it has a chip on the front cover and the place for the profession in the old passport has been replaced with your National ID.
The pages have the coat of arms of Uganda, the Crested Crane, Uganda's national emblem while some have a gorilla and the independence monument.
