News of an Ebola outbreak can understandably cause concern, but Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is providing reassurance to tourists planning a visit to the country.
Ebola transmission primarily occurs through close, direct physical contact with the bodily fluids of an infected individual. Such contact is highly unlikely for tourists engaged in typical travel and tourism activities.
The primary risk groups for Ebola have historically been healthcare workers and close relatives of infected individuals. However, advancements in healthcare, including vaccinations for medical staff, significantly reduce these risks. Furthermore, Uganda’s health authorities possess extensive experience in managing and containing infectious diseases.
Uganda has a strong track record of successfully managing Ebola outbreaks, notably containing an incident in 2014, which did not affect tourists. The nation’s expertise in disease control is recognized globally, leading to its involvement in assisting other African countries facing similar health challenges.
The recent Ebola case was reported in Mubende District. While some tourist routes may transit through the area, there are no direct tourist activities within the immediate vicinity of the outbreak, and normal travel through the district is advised to continue.
Concerns about primate tracking have also been addressed. UWA enforces stringent guidelines to maintain a safe distance between humans and primates like gorillas. The use of masks, implemented during the recent pandemic, further safeguards both primates from human diseases and potentially humans from primate-related illnesses. Gorilla groups are also regularly monitored for health changes, allowing for swift adjustments to tracking access if necessary.
UWA emphasizes that the safety of visitors within its protected areas is a top priority, with robust measures in place to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.
