The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) is gearing up for a significant rhino translocation, aiming to move the animals from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to Ajai Wildlife Reserve. A specialized team, comprising veterinarians, rangers, logistics experts, and security personnel, has convened for a three-day preparatory meeting to ensure the operation’s success.

Mr. Chemonges Sabilla, UWA’s Acting Executive Director, officially opened the meeting, issuing a firm directive to the team: “The rhinos must be in Ajai. This is not the time for bureaucracy. Be practical, be thorough, and get the job done.”

The team’s preparedness is bolstered by the recent participation of seven UWA staff in a rhino translocation benchmarking exercise in Kenya. These individuals gained invaluable hands-on experience, assisting in the capture and movement of rhinos in Kenyan conservancies, which will be crucial for the Ajai initiative.

Sabilla highlighted the critical nature of this project, noting it as a government priority outlined in its manifesto and conservation plans. He stressed the urgent need to meet a December deadline, a sentiment echoed by the anticipation from the government, local leaders, and the President. “You have the goodwill, the support, and the resources. Unfortunately, you don’t have the luxury of time,” he cautioned.

The successful relocation is seen as vital not only for the West Nile region but for the entire nation, restoring rhinos to their historical habitat. The meeting is expected to culminate in a detailed, actionable plan to guide the upcoming months of work. The team was encouraged to undertake this important conservation effort for the benefit of Uganda and for a greater purpose.
