The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA), a group of journalists from various media outlets, recently participated in a three-day educational tour of the Queen Elizabeth Conservation Area, hosted by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).
The tour provided an in-depth look at UWA’s multifaceted approach to conservation. Journalists were briefed on critical strategies including habitat protection, the monitoring of wildlife populations, methods for resolving human-wildlife conflicts, and the importance of building strong partnerships with local communities.
During their visit, UWA highlighted several key initiatives designed to safeguard wildlife and promote harmonious living between animals and people. These included the deployment of electric fences in sensitive zones to deter wildlife from entering communities and improve safety, the engagement of community members as wildlife scouts, and the execution of educational campaigns aimed at fostering awareness about coexistence among local residents, schools, and stakeholders.
Technological advancements are also central to UWA’s operations. The journalists learned about the use of digital tools, such as the Earth Ranger system and satellite collars, which are vital for effectively monitoring wildlife movements across the vast conservation area.
This collaboration between UPPA and UWA is crucial for advancing the authority’s objective of working alongside partners to effectively conserve and manage Uganda’s vital protected areas. Furthermore, such engagements help cultivate a more informed and positive media narrative surrounding conservation, leading to more accurate reporting on wildlife, sustainable tourism, and national development.
