A tragic accident claimed the life of one passenger and left several others in critical condition after a taxi smashed into a broken-down sugarcane truck along the Buwenge-Jinja road in Jinja District.
The incident occurred on Saturday morning at Kagoma Hill in Buwenge Town Council. Happy Kalanga, a 20-year-old money lender from Buwenge, died at the scene when the Kampala-bound taxi, registration UBL 132H, rammed into the truck parked in the middle of the road.
Eyewitness Joseph Kabuluku explained that the driver was overtaking another vehicle at high speed but swerved to avoid an oncoming car, only to crash into the stationary truck’s rear.
Sugarcane trucks frequently break down on this stretch and remain abandoned for hours or days, creating serious hazards for motorists, according to locals.
Injured passengers were rushed to Buwenge General Hospital and Jinja Regional Referral Hospital. Among the survivors was Moses Batwaala, Jinja District LCV chairman, who was traveling from Buwenge to Kampala since 4:30 am.
Batwaala highlighted the growing accidents due to faulty sugarcane lorries left on the highway, urging immediate action to address the issue.
