Young boxer Gladys Nanyonjo, nicknamed Smiling Girl, is gearing up for her first bout as a student at Aiden College. The school equipped her with new ring attire in red and blue, along with a banner and fan support, which she gratefully acknowledged.
Nanyonjo faces the National Novices light flyweight champion again at Kawaala Connect Point. She previously beat her opponent by unanimous decision in a club tournament last year and is determined to repeat the feat in Best of the Best Season Four.
Her father and coach, former national super featherweight champion Conrad Sseruyange, praised the school’s backing and reaffirmed their pledge for gold, noting past successes in the event.
Aiden College director Ssempala Kigozi highlighted Nanyonjo’s unique talent in the male-dominated sport, urging her to channel the winning spirit of their girls’ football team. He stressed discipline as key to success, declaring the school’s motto: win or make them lose.
Nanyonjo, who attended primary school on a sports bursary and had her first year at Aiden funded by Friends of Boxing, recently assisted her father as cornerman. On March 6 at De Rain Eco Beach in Kitubulu, her tips helped him secure a unanimous decision win over Yakubu Magumba, his 10th professional victory.
