Danny Welbeck struck in both halves to earn Brighton a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Liverpool in the Premier League, further dimming the Reds’ Champions League hopes.
The game kicked off 15 minutes late due to traffic delaying Liverpool supporters. Brighton seized the initiative early, with Welbeck heading home Diego Gomez’s cross in the 14th minute for his goal in the fourth of his last five matches.
Liverpool leveled matters around the half-hour mark when Milos Kerkez capitalized on a blunder by Brighton skipper Lewis Dunk, who misjudged a header back to his keeper, allowing the Hungarian to slot past Bart Verbruggen.
Brighton regained the lead in the 56th minute after Yankuba Minteh’s precise delivery was redirected by Jack Hinshelwood, leaving Welbeck with a simple tap-in for his 12th league goal of the season—his best single-campaign haul.
A VAR review confirmed the goal stood despite offside concerns. Liverpool, missing Mohamed Salah, Alisson, and losing Hugo Ekitike early to injury, managed just one point from their last nine league games. They remain fifth with 49 points from 31 matches, while Brighton rose four spots to eighth on 43 points, eyeing European spots.
The defeat marks Liverpool’s 10th in the league, ramping up scrutiny on manager Arne Slot amid a lackluster display. Forward Cody Gakpo voiced frustration post-match, stressing the need to battle for wins in their final seven fixtures.
