Cultural Feast at Sheraton

The Sheraton Kampala Hotel’s Seven Seas Restaurant hosted a vibrant Korean Food Night as part of the Festival de la Francophonie. The event marked the 10th anniversary of the Republic of Korea’s observer status in the OIF, drawing dignitaries like Chief Justice Dr. Flavian Zeija and Foreign Affairs Minister Henry Okello Oryem.

Korean Ambassador Park Sung-Soo highlighted food as a bridge between cultures, embodying harmony, balance, and sharing—mirroring Korea-Uganda ties. The evening kicked off with a dynamic taekwondo show by the Uganda Police team, led by Master Kim Hoon-gi, featuring poomsae, dance, and board-breaking.

Guests savored a three-course menu of traditional dishes: hobak-juk (pumpkin porridge), yachaejeon (savoury pancakes) with makgeolli rice wine, bulgogi (marinated grilled beef) paired with bokbunja raspberry wine, and hotteok (sweet pancakes) with ice cream. Louise Bay from the French Embassy noted similarities between Korean wine pairings and French traditions, wishing for more Korean spots in Kampala.

Chef Lawrence Ntale, with over a decade of experience from the Korean embassy, stressed the meticulous preparation, like fermenting kimchi over days. He prepped Sheraton’s chefs in advance, earning positive feedback. For newcomers, he suggests dakgangjeong chicken.

Guest Reactions

Sheraton GM Jean Philippe Bittencourt raved about the rich, flavored dakgangjeong, enjoying it with pumpkin porridge and cinnamon punch. David Germain-Robin from the French Embassy called it a high bar for upcoming events, spotting spiced twists on familiar items like pumpkin soup.

Arobella Mutamba found the spicy, fermented kimchi addictive and praised the welcoming vibe, now eager to visit Korea.
