Tragic road incidents claimed seven lives in Ntungamo District over the weekend, police confirmed. The most severe crash happened Saturday morning on the Kakukuru–Kayenje road in Rweikiniro Sub-county, where a Fuso truck (UAT 371G) overturned, killing five passengers.

Three victims—Hakim Mukiibi (62), Mustafa Muhoozi, and Muzafari Kirema—died instantly, while Safina Rwomushana and Julus succumbed to injuries en route to hospital. The truck, carrying mobile traders to Kagongi market, veered off after the driver lost control. Authorities cited reckless driving, overloading, and passengers on top as factors.

A survivor recounted the driver warning of brake failure on a slope before jumping out. The driver remains at large.

Separately, LC1 chairperson John Kihemu Kamanda died in a hit-and-run at Kabagyenda matooke market on the Ntungamo–Kabale road that night. Another unidentified woman perished in a crash at Karegyeya on the Ntungamo–Rukungiri road.

Local leaders like Ntungamo Municipality Mayor Jacob Kafureka blamed reckless behavior and poorly maintained old vehicles. Police note four weekly road deaths in the district since early 2026. Investigations continue.
