Debunking 10 Harmful Asthma Myths Prevalent Among Ugandans
Asthma affects thousands in Uganda, with prevalence rates between 6% and 11%. However, many lack proper diagnosis or treatment due to widespread misunderstandings. Dr. Kanishka Salunkhe, a pulmonologist with experience in India, Malaysia, Tanzania, and Uganda, sees patients enduring symptoms for years, often mislabeled as mere allergies.
“Myths create a loud barrier to informed care,” Dr. Salunkhe notes. By 2026, asthma is manageable with available treatments, but busting myths is key to better outcomes.
Here are 10 common myths:
1. Asthma is permanent and incurable. Many adults claim childhood asthma vanished, but it often lies dormant. Underlying inflammation can silently damage lungs without ongoing control.
2. It’s only a kids’ illness. Asthma strikes at any age, including in middle age, causing misdiagnosis if not suspected.
3. Triggers like dust cause asthma. These irritants worsen existing asthma but don’t create it; treatment, not just avoidance, is essential.
4. It can’t hide for years. Mild cases simmer unnoticed, delaying intervention.
5. Tests alone diagnose it. Clinical history often trumps tests, especially in mild forms.
6. It’s purely genetic and predictable. Family history raises risk, but it hits unpredictably.
7. Attacks come out of nowhere. Subtle signs like cough or tightness precede them.
8. Treat only during crises. This reactive cycle ignores prevention, like fighting fire after it spreads.
9. Inhalers are risky steroids. They deliver safe, low doses to lungs, unlike high emergency injections many accept.
10. It restricts life. Proper control enables full activity, from sports to daily routines.
