Indian Businessman Detained Over Fatal Hit-and-Run Killing Bugwere High School Cook

Uganda Police have arrested a 41-year-old Indian national following a hit-and-run crash that killed Robert Wamani, a 42-year-old cook at Bugwere High School in Budaka District. Police in Budaka District arrested Ugandan businessman of Indian origin, Rabadiya Sandeep Ramji, after a deadly road accident on March 21, 2026. The crash happened around 2pm at Nansanga Kubiri along the Mbale-Tirinyi Road.

Robert Wamani, a 42-year-old cook at Bugwere High School from Bukomba Village in Lyama Town Council, died instantly when hit by a speeding vehicle, registration UBE 858Y. The driver was heading from Mbale to Kampala and fled the scene but was stopped at Tirinyi checkpoint.

ASP Wilfred Kyempasa, Bukedi North Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the details. Ramji, 41, works as a site supervisor for Hariom Establishment Ltd and lives in Kiyindi Zone, Nakulabye, Rubaga Division. He remains in custody during ongoing investigations.

Speeding is the suspected cause. Budaka Police, led by AIP Talunga Topista, processed the scene. Wamani’s body is at Budaka Health Centre IV mortuary awaiting postmortem, and the vehicle is at Tirinyi Police Station for inspection.
