Uganda’s Ministry of Works and Transport has reassured motorists and car dealers amid shortages of digital number plates, pinning the issue on international supply chain problems tied to regional conflicts.

Spokesperson Susan Kataike confirmed delays in vehicle registrations at various car bonds, following complaints about imported vehicles stuck in warehouses. The contractor, Joint Stock Company Global Security, is addressing the shortfall, which stems from imported components like Bluetooth beacons and trackers rather than the plates themselves.

Kataike linked disruptions to the conflict in Iran, affecting shipments routed through Dubai. The company has shifted to Addis Ababa routes, expecting new supplies within a week.

Installation is currently limited to Kyambogo, creating access challenges for those outside Kampala. The ministry plans to open 20-24 regional centers to ease this.

Daily capacities include 50 voluntary replacements, 200 new vehicles at bonds, and 500-800 motorcycles. To avoid repeats, the contractor must stock three to four months’ buffer.

These plates are mandatory under the Intelligent Transport Monitoring System (ITMS) for security, traffic management, and crime tracking.
