Namilyango College is making waves in school football, defying expectations with strong determination. Known more for boxing and rugby, the over 120-year-old school is witnessing a football revival. Their team, lacking in top talent up front and in midfield, relies on hard work to compete.
Games teacher Pius Okwanga, who has coached for five years, highlights the maturity of players started in Senior One back in 2022. Midfielder Paul Vincent Ogwella stands out as a key performer. Exposure from last year’s FUFA TV Cup, where they reached the Round of 32 before losing to Mengo SS, boosted their confidence.
In Mukono’s Group B quarterfinals at Central College Kabimbiri, Namilyango faces Latifah Mixed, Dynamic, and Central College Kabimbiri. Group A at Kasana Vocational features unbeaten Mukono Kings against Merryhill, Kasana Vocational, and Seroma. All eight teams are already regional-bound.
Mukono Kings aim to rebound from last year’s registration setback, per coach Shafiq Mudholo. Merryhill’s David Kamanzi praises his squad’s chemistry from Pro Analytics Academy.
In Buikwe, Quality HS Buwundo, defending champions, advanced with a 4-2 penalty win over Nyenga SS and a 5-0 thrashing of St Andrew’s. Coach John Mugabula eyes nationals success. Hosts Mehta SS crushed St Cornelius Kalagala 5-0 and St Mary’s College Lugazi 4-0. They meet in Sunday’s final at SCOUL Stadium, with a third-place playoff at 2pm.
Regionals follow Easter, pitting Mukono, Buikwe, and Kayunga teams for national slots.
