Germany overcame Switzerland 4-3 in an exhilarating international friendly on Friday, with Florian Wirtz delivering a standout performance ahead of the World Cup.

The match kicked off with Switzerland taking a surprise lead in the 17th minute through Dan Ndoye, capitalizing on a mistake by Germany’s Nico Schlotterbeck. Jonathan Tah quickly responded with a header to equalize for the visitors.

Switzerland regained the advantage just before halftime when Breel Embolo exploited defensive lapses, but Serge Gnabry leveled the score again with a clever chip assisted by Wirtz.

After the break, the 22-year-old Wirtz unleashed a magnificent 18-yard curler past the hour mark to put Germany ahead 3-2. Switzerland fought back in the 79th minute via Joel Monteiro’s composed finish, only for Wirtz to seal the victory four minutes from time with another exquisite strike from outside the box.

Wirtz, who sat out the 2022 World Cup due to injury and has faced form challenges at Liverpool, described the game as vital preparation. “With four goal contributions, it was a strong showing,” he noted, dismissing concerns over the three goals conceded as part of team gelling.

Switzerland’s Granit Xhaka praised the matchup as a valuable lesson in composure and quality against a top side. Germany sit in World Cup Group E alongside Ecuador, Curacao, and Ivory Coast, while Switzerland face Qatar, Canada, and a playoff winner in Group B.
