Women in Uganda Seek Permanent Solutions for Facial Hair Growth

A Ugandan woman shares her struggle with chin hairs, fearing the label 'kyakulasajja' or masculine woman, and asks for permanent removal methods. Experts highlight hirsutism as a potential issue linked to genetics, hormones, PCOS, or other medical factors, urging medical consultation before cosmetic treatments. Many women, especially post-puberty, notice facial hair growth due to genetic factors. This is common among those of Asian or Mediterranean backgrounds. In Uganda, some pluck the hairs, while others embrace them based on cultural beliefs about prosperity.

This phenomenon, termed hirsutism, involves male-pattern hair growth like beards in females. Often seen as a beauty concern causing distress, it can signal underlying health issues.

Key causes include Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), hormonal imbalances with high male hormones or cortisol, aging, menopause, and medications like steroids for allergies or bodybuilding.

Rarely, tumors producing male hormones lead to virilisation—symptoms such as deepened voice, hair loss, clitoral enlargement, and muscle gain.

Obesity worsens it via insulin resistance, raising diabetes risk and hormone levels. Maintaining healthy weight, avoiding unapproved drugs, and watching for symptoms is advised.

Options like laser or electrolysis exist for removal, but doctors must first rule out medical roots.
