Uganda’s tourism sector proved highly lucrative in 2025, bringing in $1.7 billion (Shs6.3 trillion) as reported by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities. This industry supports countless jobs, both direct and indirect, helping many citizens achieve financial stability.

Visitor numbers climbed impressively from 1.3 million in 2024 to 1.65 million the following year, signaling strong growth. Yet, to maximize returns, significant upgrades are essential.

Poor road conditions plague many routes to tourist attractions, especially during rainy seasons when some become unusable. The government should prioritize building motorable roads in untapped areas rich with tourism promise to tap into new revenue sources.

Emerging destinations often lack essential amenities like hotels, restaurants, and rental services meeting global standards. Authorities can address this by incentivizing private investors, constructing facilities themselves, or forging public-private partnerships.

Expanding air access is equally vital. The nearing completion of Kabalega International Airport in western Uganda will allow direct flights to key sites, bypassing long road trips from Entebbe. Additional airports in other regions would further enhance tourism and drive broader economic progress.
