Veteran Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye Passes Away in Kampala

Retired Supreme Court Justice Augustine Nshimye passed away early Friday morning at his residence in Kampala, as confirmed by the Judiciary.
James Ereemye Mawanda, the Judiciary’s Public Relations Officer, acknowledged the news in a phone interview, noting that an official statement from the institution would follow shortly.
Family sources revealed that the veteran judge had been fighting cancer-related issues and was recently discharged from hospital to receive care at home.
Justice Nshimye’s career in Uganda’s legal and political arenas spanned decades. He started in public service in 1967 as a senior clerk, advancing to Deputy Chief Registrar from 1986 to 1988 before entering private practice.
Appointed to the Court of Appeal (also the Constitutional Court) in 2008, he became acting Supreme Court Justice in 2010 and was confirmed in that role in 2015 until retiring in March 2017 at age 70. He was reappointed as acting Supreme Court Justice post-retirement for two more years.
Politically active, he represented Mityana South as MP from 1988 to 2008, served as Minister for Regional Cooperation in the NRM government, and was a founding member of the ruling National Resistance Movement.
He also held roles as Inspector of Courts from 2015 and pioneer Chief Inspector of Courts.
Funeral details will be announced by the Judiciary and family in due course.
