Bus operators affiliated with the Uganda Bus Owners Association (UBOA) are contemplating adjustments to current fares as Easter approaches. This move aims to counter the impact of volatile global oil prices, which have driven up local fuel and operational costs.

UBOA chairperson Solomon Nsiimire noted that expenses, including fuel, have risen sharply due to geopolitical tensions involving the US, Israel, and Iran. No changes have been implemented yet, but a review is underway, with public updates to follow soon.

To ensure a safe festive period, UBOA is collaborating with the Ministry of Works and Uganda Police traffic department. All buses will undergo mechanical checks, and relief drivers are ready for extended trips to handle passenger surges, allowing adequate rest for drivers.

Taxi operators, led by Federation of Uganda Taxi Operators (UTOF) chairperson Rashid Ssekindi, are also emphasizing discipline. Drivers face warnings against speeding, drunk driving, and route deviations. Enforcement teams are urged to partner with police, while passengers should use only approved stages.

Police data shows progress: traffic offences dropped 24.4% to 322,441 last year from 426,432 in 2024. Crashes totaled 26,044, including 4,602 fatal, 13,563 serious, and 7,879 minor incidents.
