Peter Banura, aged 51, served as the inaugural LCV chairperson of Kikuube District since its formation from Hoima in 2018. A National Resistance Movement (NRM) member and son of Maj. Gen. Matayo Kyaligonza, he was set for swearing-in after re-election when tragedy struck.

The accident happened around 8:20pm Saturday at Butyamba Village. Police spokesperson SP Julius Allan Hakiza stated a Toyota Hiace taxi (UBQ 853E) from Fort Portal to Hoima lost control due to speeding, hitting a parked Toyota Hilux (UG 3400084) and knocking down Banura.

Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, from Bunyoro and Woman MP for Kakumiro, called his death a massive loss, praising his commitment to leadership and district progress. Local Government Minister Raphael Magyezi remembered him as a humble, dedicated young leader.

Masindi Chairperson Cosmas Byaruhanga described Banura as a visionary who worked tirelessly for Kikuube residents, urging road users to follow traffic rules. Kikuube RDC Godwin Angalia noted his peaceful nature, security awareness, and service focus.

Female councillor Tedy Kyomugisha highlighted his people-centered approach, infrastructure push like the district headquarters, and promotion of hard work. PWD councillor Edith Karungi praised his support for vulnerable groups, including sponsoring disabled students to university.

Uganda’s road crashes rose 3.7% in 2025 per police reports, with 4,602 fatal incidents.

A requiem mass is planned for Tuesday noon at Christ the King Church, Kampala, followed by vigils. On Wednesday, his body arrives at Kikuube headquarters for a council sitting before a vigil in Buhimba, Kigaya.
