The family of a 32-year-old man from Bugiri District is calling for justice after he was allegedly shot dead by a police officer during a dispute over Shs500.
Bashir Mugoya, the victim’s father, described his son as innocent and urged human rights groups to ensure police take responsibility. He demanded the Uganda Police Force cover burial costs and support the family. Mugoya claimed officers raided their home at night without uniforms or notifying local leaders, leading to confusion.
Nathan Mugoya, a village official and neighbor, criticized the police for not involving community leaders in the minor matter. He questioned why it escalated to gunfire and suggested the shooting officer might have been intoxicated.
East Busoga Regional Police spokesperson Michael Kasadha confirmed the arrest of Buwunga Police Post OC Innocent Nuwagaba and Corporal Stephen Okwalinga for questioning. He noted the incident worsened when residents attacked officers with weapons, prompting shots to disperse the crowd.
Police investigations remain ongoing, with a plea for the family to stay calm.
