Christopher Okello Onyumu, the man accused of the horrific murders of four children at a daycare in Ggaba, Kampala, is set for a rapid trial at the very site of the crime. This approach utilizes Uganda’s recently launched mobile court system, enabled by the Constitution (Operation of Mobile Courts) (Practice) Directions, 2026.
Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo revealed the plan during a funeral service for retired Supreme Court judge Augustine Sebuturo Nshimye at All Saints Church. ‘We are going to handle this case within this week… through the mobile court system,’ she stated.
The attack occurred on April 2, 2026, when Onyumu allegedly posed as a parent to enter the facility and carry out the killings. The victims, all aged two to three years, were identified as Gideon Eteku, Kaise Alungat, Ignatius Sseruyange, and Ryan Odeke.
The incident has sparked widespread shock and highlighted vulnerabilities in childcare security. In response, State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysestom Muyingo ordered the daycare’s closure pending further probes.
This mobile court setup allows proceedings outside conventional courtrooms, resembling a public tribunal to ensure prompt accountability.
