Christopher Okello Onyumu, accused of killing four toddlers at a daycare in Ggaba, Kampala, has a background marked by mental health challenges, family members and local officials have disclosed.

Relatives confirmed that Onyumu was sent to the United States for treatment due to his condition. He returned to Uganda in November 2025 without informing his family, who thought he was still abroad. His father recognized him from photos shared online and alerted police to his mental history.

Local council chairman Arnold Kasujja noted the family’s surprise at his unannounced return. Taxi drivers reported that Onyumu had consulted a traditional healer, who supposedly recommended ritual sacrifice for prosperity.

Police are probing unconfirmed reports tying him to his stepbrother’s death in 2017, which prompted his overseas treatment. In the attack, Onyumu pretended to be a prospective parent, then targeted playing children, resulting in the tragic loss of four lives.

An enraged mob confronted him post-attack, but police and military intervened to secure his arrest at Kabalagala station.

State Minister for Higher Education John Chrysestom Muyingo inspected the site, ordering the daycare and related facilities shut down. Officials promise aid to grieving families amid ongoing motive inquiries.

The case has sparked debates on mental health support, child safety, and community vigilance in Uganda.
