The Anti-Corruption Court in Uganda sentenced Agnes Nandutu, ex-State Minister for Karamoja Affairs, to four years imprisonment on Friday for her involvement in the iron sheets scandal.

Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga stated that the sentence reflects the offence’s gravity, aiming to prevent future abuses of public office. She highlighted Nandutu’s high position as MP and minister, which required utmost integrity in executing government programs.

The iron sheets were allocated by the Office of the Prime Minister to support Karamoja’s vulnerable Karachunas under disarmament initiatives, with each beneficiary due 26 sheets. Yet, court records showed only 25 legitimate recipients got them, while extras went to unauthorized individuals.

Prosecutors described the act as a serious abuse of duty that robbed needy communities of vital aid. The defence sought mercy, citing Nandutu’s remorse, recovery of sheets, and payment of Shs26.7 million for unrecovered ones, plus her health issues and family duties.

Justice Kajuga rejected leniency, noting restitution followed the scandal’s exposure under directive. She ruled that public trust breach and community harm outweighed personal factors, despite acknowledging Nandutu’s apology.

The judge criticized corruption penalties as too mild, urging legislative review, and imposed a 10-year public office ban. Remand time will be deducted, recovered sheets returned to OPM, with no compensation ordered. Nandutu can appeal within 14 days.
