Aloe vera stands out as a resilient crop that survives extreme weather, unlike many plants. Farmers are cashing in on its commercial potential while reaping soil health rewards from its nutrient-rich properties.

Regenerative farmer trainer Lucky Mukasa highlights how aloe vera’s rooting hormones enhance moisture retention and nutrient availability. Its roots bind soil particles, reducing erosion and stress, and naturally repel pests like armyworms without chemicals, keeping farms organic.

Planting aloe vera around trees prevents termite damage thanks to bioactive compounds such as phenols, sulfur, and saponins that deter microbes.

Decomposing leaves serve as organic fertilizer, replacing synthetics and boosting yields. Coffee farmer Jeremiah Kalanzi in Luweero District uses it to stabilize erosion-prone soils with its deep roots.

To plant, use 3-4 month mature suckers from mother plants in 14-15cm holes. They adapt well to various soils in cool, suitable conditions.

Beyond farming, aloe vera gel soothes burns and irritations, acts as a moisturizer, and its juice aids digestion in humans and animals. Mukasa mixes it in livestock water for better immunity and healing.
