In the misty hills of Uganda’s Kigezi region, famous for its mountain gorillas, football is emerging from the shadows. Kigezi HomeBoyz FC, affectionately called ‘The Gorillas,’ currently lead the 2025/26 Fufa Big League table with 42 points from 22 matches, three points clear of second-placed Blacks Power. This unexpected dominance has the club on the cusp of promotion to the StarTimes Uganda Premier League, last achieved by a Kabale side in 2001.
The journey began in 2012 as Kabale Sharp, evolving from casual games at Police Barracks Grounds in Kigongi. Led by founders like Baker Sentongo and coach Ian Mugisha, they secured Big League promotion in 2016/17 via the Western Regional playoff. A strong 42-point debut season fell just short of the top flight.
Challenges followed, including mid-table finishes and the Covid-19 disruption in 2019/20 when they sat fourth. A pivotal rebrand to Kigezi HomeBoyz in 2019 broadened their appeal, paired with administrative upgrades and a 2021-2025 strategic plan under former president Spencer Sabiiti, themed ‘For the Community.’
Community backing is key: the club company funds 70% of costs, with fans covering the rest through food, merchandise, and awards. Chairman Davis Muhangi emphasizes the club’s role as regional pride.
Coach Sadiq Ssempijja has instilled discipline, evident in recent 1-0 wins over Bunyaruguru United, Ntugasaze, and Wakiso Giants. Key players include Henry Kitegenyi, Edrine Opaala, and John Okorut, forming a resilient unit.
Like the gorillas of their homeland, Kigezi HomeBoyz embody quiet strength and determination, poised to step into the spotlight. Upcoming fixtures include Young Elephant vs. Kigezi HomeBoyz at Elephants Park.
