Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan has instructed all government bodies to cut fuel consumption right away, pointing to worldwide energy market volatility from disrupted oil routes and rising prices.

During a swearing-in event at State House on April 8, 2026, she highlighted how some nations are facing shortages and promoting remote work to save energy. Although shipping shows slight recovery and fuel costs have dipped marginally, she stressed the need for caution.

To set an example, President Hassan slimmed down her official convoy to just her vehicle, a police escort, and one backup car. She directed other officials to share a bus, pushing public entities to follow suit and curb high vehicle usage from frequent trips.

She warned traders against unjustified price hikes on existing stock but noted inevitable increases for disrupted imports. Reassuring citizens, she confirmed Tanzania’s stability with three months of fuel reserves and ongoing diplomatic efforts to resolve conflicts.

At the same ceremony, Prof. Palamagamba Kabudi was sworn in as Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office, replacing the late William Lukuvi after a recent reshuffle. The President lauded his expertise for bolstering government coordination amid economic challenges.
