Bishop Silvester Kisitu of the Orthodox Diocese of Jinja and Eastern Uganda has urged the government to review the newly proposed building law due to rising public concerns.
Speaking during an Easter service on Sunday, the bishop highlighted worries from citizens about the Building Control (Amendment) Act 2026, recently assented to by the president on March 19. The reforms by the National Building Review Board (NBRB) aim to enhance oversight, enforce safety standards, and impose stricter penalties for unsafe structures.
While acknowledging the need for construction regulations to prevent building collapses, Bishop Kisitu noted that certain provisions have sparked fear and uncertainty. ‘This new bill has shocked many people,’ he said, calling for humility in revisiting problematic areas to gain public support.
Church member Ms Erina Namwase echoed these sentiments, suggesting the government prioritize monitoring ongoing projects over adding burdens on ordinary citizens. She advocated for better enforcement of existing rules to build trust without unnecessary anxiety.
The law introduces powers to halt, evacuate, or demolish unsafe buildings, tighter supervision, and project timelines to standardize practices and boost accountability in Uganda’s booming construction sector.
