Tottenham Hotspur’s relegation woes worsened after a narrow 1-0 loss to Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. Nordi Mukiele’s deflected shot just past the hour mark proved decisive, handing Sunderland a vital win and boosting their European hopes.
The defeat marked Roberto de Zerbi’s debut as Tottenham’s third manager this season, extending their winless Premier League run to 14 games—the longest since 1935. Sitting on 30 points from 32 matches, Spurs trail West Ham by two points and now occupy third-bottom position.
Sunderland, climbing to 10th with 46 points, dominated chances. Mukiele headed wide early, Granit Xhaka missed narrowly, and Tottenham keeper Antonin Kinsky denied Brian Brobbey just before halftime.
Tottenham thought they’d won a penalty when Randal Kolo Muani went down, but VAR overturned the call. Later, captain Cristian Romero clashed with Kinsky under pressure from Brobbey, forcing Romero off injured while Kinsky continued bandaged.
De Zerbi praised his players’ spirit, insisting one win could spark change. Sunderland held firm despite a late Pedro Porro effort, as Regis Le Bris’ side eyes Europe.
Spurs face a crucial run-in, starting with De Zerbi’s old club Brighton next week.
