Christopher Okello Onyum, the main suspect in the tragic deaths of four young children at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, appeared before High Court Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha on Monday. The session took place in a mobile public trial at Ggaba.

In his first court appearance, Okello confirmed he understood the charges but firmly denied involvement in the April 2 incident. Responding ‘Not guilty’ in an American accent to the initial murder count, he drew gasps and boos from the large crowd of onlookers.

Judge Komuhangi quickly urged the audience to remain orderly, emphasizing the formal nature of the proceedings. Prior to entering pleas, Okello consulted briefly with his two state-appointed lawyers before rejecting all four murder charges.

Chief State Attorney Jonathan Muwaganya and Anna Kiiza represent the prosecution. Kiiza introduced agreed-upon evidence, including four postmortem reports outlining the toddlers’ causes of death, which stunned the Ggaba community and the nation.

With the not guilty plea recorded, the prosecution will now present its full case, allowing the judge to decide Okello’s guilt or innocence.
