Arne Slot Frustrated by Liverpool's Wasteful Finishing in Champions League Exit to PSG

Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed disappointment over his team's failure to convert numerous chances into goals, resulting in a 2-0 home loss to PSG and a 4-0 aggregate defeat in the Champions League quarterfinals. Despite dominating possession and shots, Ousmane Dembele's brace sealed PSG's progression to the semifinals. Liverpool crashed out of the Champions League after a 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain at Anfield, giving the defending champions a commanding 4-0 aggregate victory. PSG absorbed heavy second-half pressure from the hosts, backed by a passionate crowd, to secure their fifth semifinal appearance in seven seasons.

Arne Slot highlighted his side’s season-long issue with clinical finishing. Liverpool held 53% possession, fired 21 shots compared to PSG’s 12, and earned eight corners to the visitors’ two, yet failed to score. Ousmane Dembele netted twice in the second half to confirm the result.

“It’s another example of not converting chances,” Slot remarked, noting their expected goals (xG) of 1.94 fell short. He also lamented a VAR overturned penalty on Alexis Mac Allister and an injury to Hugo Ekitike, adding to the frustration.

Slot gave Alexander Isak his first start since a December leg injury. The Swedish striker came close to scoring twice, underscoring Liverpool’s need for his quality up front.

Despite the exit, Slot remains positive: “The future looks bright. We competed with Europe’s champions and dominated at home, generating plenty of chances—converting them is the next step.”

Liverpool, fifth in the Premier League and chasing Champions League qualification, face Everton at their new stadium on Sunday.
