Ghana’s football association has finalized its coaching changes by appointing Carlos Queiroz, a 73-year-old Portuguese coach, as the new head coach in preparation for the upcoming World Cup.
Queiroz replaces Otto Addo, who was sacked last month after Ghana endured a five-game losing streak, including heavy defeats to Austria (5-1) and Germany (2-1). Despite securing World Cup qualification, the Black Stars missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations.
The veteran mentor boasts extensive World Cup experience, having led Portugal to the 2010 Round of 16 in South Africa—where they fell to Spain—and guiding Iran in 2014, 2018, and 2022 tournaments.
Queiroz’s resume spans nearly four decades, with national team roles in the UAE, South Africa, Colombia, Egypt, and Qatar. At club level, he managed Sporting CP, Real Madrid, and the New York/New Jersey Metrostars in MLS. He also served as assistant to Alex Ferguson at Manchester United during two stints (2002-2003 and 2004-2008).
Ghana kicks off its World Cup Group L campaign against Panama on June 17 in Toronto, followed by matches against England and Croatia. Before that, Queiroz will oversee friendlies in Mexico on May 22 and Wales on June 2.
