The Lango Cultural Institution, known as Won Nyaci me Lango, has decided against spearheading President Yoweri Museveni’s upcoming event in Lira City scheduled for April 18.

Spokesperson Patrick Okwir explained that initial plans suggested a public lecture, but updates from the Resident City Commissioner’s office indicate it is a thanksgiving and victory celebration following Museveni’s re-election.

“As a cultural body, we are legally prohibited from leading such partisan events and must remain neutral,” Okwir stated.

He emphasized that the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, along with stakeholders, should handle the organization. The institution offers moral support and advisory input where needed.

This comes amid earlier tensions among NRM leaders in Lango Sub-region, who objected to the inclusion of non-party members in planning committees. Oyam NRM chairperson Bosco Onyik noted a lack of formal communication to district leaders.

Museveni was declared winner of the January 15, 2026 election by the Uganda Electoral Commission on January 17, securing 71.65% of votes for a seventh term. Main rival Bobi Wine received 24.72%, amid reports of over 20 deaths during the polls with 52.5% voter turnout.
