Incoming MPs from Uganda’s ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) concluded a week-long orientation at the National Leadership Institute in Kyankwanzi, adopting key resolutions focused on fighting corruption and boosting economic transformation.

Over 400 MPs, mostly NRM members along with some opposition and NRM-leaning independents, attended the retreat. President Museveni addressed the group, reiterating his battle against corruption since 1986 and warning against practices harming the economy.

The resolutions, drafted by a subcommittee under Dr. Tanga Odoi, cover ideological alignment, accountable leadership, economy, legislative oversight, and governance. A central theme is zero tolerance for corruption in leadership, parliament, and public administration.

MPs proposed adding an anti-corruption pillar to the government’s Tenfold Growth Strategy, targeting a $500 billion economy by 2040 through agro-industrialization, tourism, minerals, and technology. They aim to grow GDP from $66 billion to $68.5 billion next financial year.

Under ideological alignment, leaders must uphold discipline, ethics, and merit-based appointments like permanent secretaries. Economic pledges include aligning with NDP IV, expanding credit access, value addition, and infrastructure like zonal universities.

Legislative commitments focus on accountability, program monitoring, and enforcing MP integrity. Governance resolutions call for strengthening NRM structures, annual retreats, NALI expansion, and grassroots engagement with youth, women, and PWDs.

NRM Secretary General Richard Todwong stated these steps will support the 2026-2031 manifesto, ‘Protecting the gains as we make a qualitative leap into a high middle-income status,’ tied to NDP IV for tenfold growth.
