Pope Leo XIV arrived in Yaounde, Cameroon, on Wednesday, urging leaders including President Paul Biya—who has governed since 1982—to break the chains of corruption and prioritize peace over the influence of the rich and powerful.
In a direct address to Biya and Prime Minister Joseph Dion Ngute, the pope declared that true authority must resist profit-driven idolatry and foster justice. He lamented the ongoing Anglophone crisis, which has claimed thousands of lives, and violence from groups like Boko Haram in the north, robbing youth of education and hope.
‘No more war, with its death, destruction, and exile,’ Leo stated, calling for a conscience examination and bold steps forward. He stressed that security should respect human rights and governance means valuing citizens’ input for lasting solutions.
The 70-year-old pope, on his second stop of a complex 10-day tour covering four African nations and 11 cities, faced renewed attacks from U.S. President Donald Trump via social media. Leo, marking one year as the first U.S. pope in May, reaffirmed his commitment to dialogue despite the backlash.
Biya’s government rejects corruption claims, crediting his rule for regional stability. Separatists in English-speaking areas pledged safe passage during the visit. Thousands welcomed Leo with song and dance, under billboards proclaiming Cameroon the ‘Land of Hope.’
The tour continues to Bamenda for a peace meeting and a massive Mass in Douala expected to draw 600,000.
