Justin Akena, employed by Magnum Security Company, was stationed at Goldex Uganda Limited on Mawanda Road in Kamwokya. Over the weekend, he reportedly broke into Maggie Katuramu’s vehicle and took a bag with Shs 29 million in cash plus 900 grams of gold valued at around Shs 500 million.

Initial police reports from Kira Road Division mistakenly cited Shs 290 million stolen, but Kampala Metropolitan deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire clarified the correct figure as Shs 29 million. Officers tracked Akena to Gaspa village in Bweyale, where he was arrested at a newly opened retail shop funded by the stolen cash. He has admitted to the crime.

Akena is detained at Mawanda Road Police Station while investigations proceed and charges are prepared. This case highlights a pattern of thefts by private security guards, including a November 2024 incident where two G4S guards stole over Shs 1 billion from a bullion van on Entebbe Road, and another involving a Safetec guard in an arson and theft at Snail Forex Bureau.
