Real Madrid is in turmoil following a heartbreaking Champions League quarter-final loss to Bayern Munich, their final shot at silverware this season now gone.
Trailing Barcelona by nine points in LaLiga with just seven matches remaining, the European giants face a second straight year without trophies. Earlier shocks included a Copa del Rey upset against second-tier Albacete in January and a winless streak stretching a month.
The season started rocky with Xabi Alonso’s appointment, lasting only six months before Alvaro Arbeloa stepped up from the second team in mid-January. Despite some performance upticks, results have faltered, putting pressure on president Florentino Perez to decide Arbeloa’s fate.
Fans, used to 15 European Cup triumphs including five in the last 12 years, question the squad’s balance and depth. Vinicius Jr’s stalled contract talks—he’s off-contract next season—add fuel, alongside debates on pairing him effectively with Kylian Mbappe.
Barcelona could seal a second straight LaLiga title against Real at Camp Nou on May 10, deepening the woes. Defensive and midfield reinforcements loom, but hinge on whether to center the project around Mbappe or rethink the attack.
The weeks ahead may shape Real Madrid’s future direction.
