High Court Judge Alice Komuhangi Khaukha presided over proceedings in a makeshift courtroom on Thursday, delayed by the late arrival of suspect Christopher Okello Onyum amid rain. The session began with a medical report from Dr. Charles Kajjora at Luzira Upper Prison, confirming Okello’s childhood sickle cell disease via lab tests. He had skipped medication for two months, was underweight, but has improved on treatment and is stable in health and mind. Okello confirmed his fitness to proceed.

Prosecution witness PW8, car rental director Hashim Juma, resumed testimony under oath. He detailed WhatsApp exchanges starting March 12, 2026, where Okello inquired about renting a self-drive Rav4 in Kampala. Negotiations covered pricing ($45/day), delivery options, and requirements like driving license and passport. Okello requested delivery to Kyanja, Kisaasi, providing a Google Pin for Namugera Close, and agreed to transport fees.

The deal involved cash payments starting the next day, with multiple back-and-forth messages over days, including rescheduling from March 13-14 to March 31. Juma noted Okello’s clear communication and punctuality in responses.

During cross-examination, defense lawyer Mr. Kumbuga questioned Juma’s location on April 2 and his lack of mental health qualifications to assess sobriety. Juma stood firm, stating Okello’s organized inquiries, internet use, and transaction readiness indicated normal behavior—no ‘mad person’ could handle such dealings, drive, or hold a license.

The judge queried if Juma would rent to unlicensed drivers, to which he affirmed verification protocols. Proceedings adjourned for a break.
