Teen sensation Gout Gout powered to gold in the men’s under-20 100m at the Australian junior championships in Brisbane on Saturday. Clocking 10.21 seconds with a legal +0.5 m/s tailwind, the 18-year-old overcame a sluggish start to surge past rivals and finish first.
He beat Zavier Peacock (10.35) and Uwezo Lubenda (10.37), securing his second consecutive under-20 national title. Earlier, Gout posted 10.19 in the heats and 10.44 in the semis.
Waving to family and fans after the race, Gout explained, “I didn’t have the best start… I came out for the ‘w’ and put on a show.” This victory follows his recent 200m breakthrough of 19.67 seconds at the Australian Athletics Championships, the first sub-20 by a man from his country.
Gout holds a legal 100m PB of 10.00 from February, with a wind-aided 9.99 prior. Confident about sub-10, he said, “Time will tell obviously but I am pretty sure that is coming soon… The more pressure, the faster you run.”
His time trails Australia’s record of 9.93 by Patrick Johnson.
