Hellen Nakimuli, the Woman Representative for Kalangala District in the outgoing 11th Parliament, has tragically passed away after complications from surgery. The news was shared by National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi on X, expressing shock and prayers for strength during this difficult period.
Nakimuli, a dedicated Orthodox Christian and volleyball enthusiast who served as shadow information minister, reportedly died at Mulago Hospital. Details on the surgery and precise cause remain unavailable.
Her passing comes less than a month before the 12th Parliament’s inauguration on May 13-15, 2026, in Kampala, following January elections. She was the only re-elected Orthodox MP, as noted by the Orthodox Church in Uganda, mourning their ‘staunch faithful’ daughter of Rev. Fr. Walusimbi Christopher.
Parliament Speaker Anita Among conveyed deep sorrow, calling it a profound shock and praying for her family and colleagues. Fellow MP Ronald Evans Kanyike remembered her as a kind leader and sister whose light dimmed too soon.
In one of her final public moments on April 13, Nakimuli urged religious leaders at a Buganda monarch’s birthday event to confront human rights abuses and speak truth to power. During her last parliamentary session on April 15, she pushed the government to hasten preparations for Uganda’s role in co-hosting the 2027 Afcon with Kenya and Tanzania.
