President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni held discussions with H.E. Hailemariam Desalegn, the former Prime Minister of Ethiopia and current Chairperson of the Board for the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).
The meeting, which took place at State Lodge, Nakasero, saw President Museveni commend AGRA for its vital role in enhancing food systems across the continent, particularly through promoting science, innovation, and policy advocacy.
President Museveni emphasized the importance of developing practical, home-grown solutions tailored to Africa’s unique agricultural challenges. He pointed out the limitations of older methods, such as communal dams, given the increasing adoption of modern practices like zero grazing.
The Ugandan President also shared the government’s focus on modern water harvesting systems for irrigation and industrial needs, while acknowledging that not all water sources, like chlorinated piped water, are universally suitable for agriculture.
He welcomed AGRA’s strategy of promoting modern, indigenous farming techniques over imported models, which may not align with local conditions, especially in areas like animal feed production. The President also underscored the significance of boreholes in supporting rural households.
On his part, H.E. Desalegn expressed gratitude for the meeting and highlighted AGRA’s significant progress in sustainably advancing Africa’s food systems. He noted that the organization, celebrating 20 years, remains dedicated to driving agricultural transformation throughout Africa.
AGRA’s work in Uganda commenced in 2006, evolving from an initial management base in Nairobi to a full country office overseeing expanding programs. The organization has been instrumental in training scientists in plant breeding, agronomy, and soil science, many of whom now hold key roles in national research institutions.
AGRA’s interventions in Uganda are aligned with national priorities, including support for the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP). They have provided technical and financial aid to strengthen agricultural planning and assisted Uganda in securing climate financing, such as through the Green Climate Fund, to bolster the resilience of smallholder farmers.
Mr. David Wozemba, AGRA Uganda Country Director, stated that the organization operates in 15 African nations. Their focus includes enhancing seed systems by ensuring farmers access quality seeds via an agro-dealer network, alongside supporting early-generation seed production and improved certification systems. AGRA also advocates for better fertilizer policies and promotes the adoption of modern farming technologies.
