Stephen Akandwanaho, a Ugandan living in Durban for over ten years as executive dean of IT at Growth Ten Group, first noticed Phumzile Mavimbela during a South African institutional event. While she presented on stage, he found himself captivated beyond the professional setting.

Mavimbela, raised in Johannesburg with a journalism background and now a marketing creative, barely noticed him at first. Their connection sparked when he got her number under the pretext of event photos and invited her to dinner. Despite her initial doubts, his directness about seeking a committed relationship won her over.

The couple navigated a long-distance relationship between Durban and Johannesburg, relying on daily calls, shared prayers, movie nights, and family involvement to build trust. Distance proved challenging yet strengthening.

For the proposal on her birthday, Akandwanaho orchestrated a magical day in Cape Town: a helicopter ride, red carpet landing, and a garden setup with violinist and family flown in secretly. She said yes amid floral arches.

Traditional South African lobola negotiations followed, uniting their families through cultural rituals. They then planned a wedding in Uganda on March 28, with Mavimbela introduced to his family in western Uganda.

The wedding day unfolded perfectly, with emotional moments like family speeches making Mavimbela feel truly welcomed. Looking ahead, they anticipate a Greece honeymoon after their first child’s arrival, crediting faith and intention for their journey.
