The National Secretariat for Patriotism Corps (NSPC) has concluded a training program for 1,250 students from three Mbale schools, emphasizing discipline and national values. The ceremony, presided over by NSPC Commissioner Hellen Seku, took place against a backdrop of significant concerns regarding escalating violence and insecurity within schools in the district.

Commissioner Seku revealed that local leaders had escalated these security worries to higher authorities, prompting President Museveni to order a thorough investigation. “The leaders here raised serious concerns and wanted the matter brought to the attention of His Excellency the President,” Seku stated, adding that the President tasked the entire district security team to provide a detailed report on the root causes of the violent behavior.

Adding to the complexity, parents have reportedly expressed frustration over perceived police inaction, alleging that students apprehended for criminal activities are often quickly released. “We want to establish whether this is true and whether there could be deeper issues, including possible links to criminal gangs,” Seku remarked, indicating that these findings will inform government action in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.

Seku also suggested that school congestion might be a contributing factor to unrest, proposing staggered dismissal times as a potential solution, a strategy found effective in Kampala schools. She further urged school administrators and teachers to play a more proactive role in instilling discipline, emphasizing the importance of ideological grounding among educators.

Authorities are awaiting a comprehensive report from the district security leadership to guide further interventions. This pass-out ceremony highlights the government’s continued commitment to fostering patriotism among the youth, even as challenges to school safety persist.
