Sandra, a 47-year-old high-achiever from Kihihi who swore off motherhood, faced a shocking twist: a positive pregnancy test. Long dreaming of retiring at 50 to build a cottage near Bwindi Forest and travel the world, she often boasted of her ‘retired’ uterus while doting on her nieces and nephews like a fun grandma.

The surprise came after a Santorini trip where she fell for a short-term lover, now back with his Liverpool family. Early signs—breast tenderness, metallic taste, fatigue, mild fever, and a missed period—raised suspicions, despite her age making periods irregular.

As the group’s ‘musawo,’ a friend confirmed the pregnancy with a test kit. Fertility odds for Ugandan women aged 45-49 are low at 29 per 1,000, versus 41 per 1,000 normally, but Sandra beat them. Her gloomy reaction contrasted her ecstatic mother’s ‘answered prayers.’

With the Greek father out of the picture and termination off the table after the family call, friends stepped up. Discussions covered age-related pregnancy risks and mitigation, rallying the crew as eager uncles for this ‘injury time equalizer’—a true pension baby.
