Martha Byoga, known as Maritza, a 34-year-old multimedia host and spoken word artist, has always felt at peace with her choice not to have children. From childhood daydreams about family that never truly resonated with her, this conviction has only strengthened over time.
Byoga clarifies that her decision isn’t driven by career ambitions or doubts about her parenting abilities. She loves children and envisions teaching someday, but lacks the personal desire to raise her own. ‘I don’t believe in doing something I don’t have the desire to do,’ she explains, emphasizing her current life feels complete.
Reactions from others vary, with some persistently trying to change her mind or predicting regret. Byoga attributes much pushback to societal conditioning and responds with understanding, letting judgments pass without lingering impact. In relationships, she values alignment, noting many partners independently shared her views on avoiding marriage and kids.
Despite misconceptions labeling childfree women as selfish or unfulfilled, Byoga leans into open conversations. She celebrates multiple ways to embody womanhood through art, deep connections, shared meals, dancing, and quiet sunsets.
Her advice to women: Identify your true wants and pursue them unapologetically.
