Debunking the Myth: Does Sugar Really Fuel Cancer Growth?
The idea that sugar directly feeds cancer is a common misconception, as all carbohydrates from foods like rice, fruits, bread, and sugar are converted into glucose by the body. Understanding this process helps clarify the real relationship between diet and cancer risk. Many people believe avoiding sugar can prevent cancer because it ‘feeds’ tumors. However, this is a misunderstanding of how the body processes food.
No matter the source—be it table sugar, rice, fruits, or bread—your body breaks carbohydrates down into glucose, its primary energy source. Cancer cells do consume more glucose than normal cells, but this doesn’t mean sugar causes cancer or that cutting it out will stop tumors.
The truth is that all cells, including healthy ones, rely on glucose. A low-sugar diet won’t selectively starve cancer while sparing normal tissues. Instead, focus on a balanced diet to manage overall health and reduce cancer risk factors.
Experts emphasize that while excessive sugar can lead to obesity, a known cancer risk, sugar itself doesn’t directly cause the disease.
